Ascott Newsletter - October 2012

Ascott
Welcome to our October NewsletterOctober 2012
Dear carlie
Thank you to all those people who visited our stand at the first ever Scottish Smallholders Show (see picture). What a fantastic day for all those involved and very many congratulations to the organisers. It was a pleasure to meet customers – existing and new, and for Mark to be asked to present the poultry prizes.
Talking of poultry... our next show date is the National Poultry Show at Stoneleigh on 17th/18th November. Hope to see some of you there!
Among our October special offers are some useful Christmas presents – the Deluxe Jam Making Kit, Hard and Soft Cheese Making Kit and the Sloe Gin Making Kit.
We have included a recipe for a simple (but delicious) Sloe Gin that would be a great Christmas present.
Our kit contains 2 x Kilner jars, 4 x Sloe Gin bottles, labels and a funnel for easier decanting.
Kind Regards
Mark and Kate

How to make simple sloe gin
Here is a recipe for making your own sloe gin which, if kept long enough, will make a great Christmas present for someone next year!

You will need for each 1000ml kilner jar:
454 grm sloes
112 grm granulated sugar
0.75 litre gin

Wash and sort your sloes and take out any bruised fruit. Prick the sloes with a needle and place into the kilner jar. Cover with sugar and shake down to fill all the gaps. Top up the kilner jar with the gin and seal tightly. Turn it upside down a few times to distribute sugar.
Shake every day until the sugar is dissolved and leave in a dark place for at least 3 months. Strain into clean bottles and leave for another 3 months.
Don’t be tempted to keep the sloes in the gin for longer than 12 months before straining as it will spoil the liqueur.
There will be some more Christmas present ideas coming in our next month’s email so keep a look out for them.
