External parasites can cause intense irritation to sheep, and can also damage the fleece, the skin, and can spread other diseases. If neglected, they can kill.

So, if you see a sheep rubbing itself against a fence, biting at its side, stamping a foot, or notice a wet or dirty-looking patch of fleece, the chances are that it is suffering from some form of external parasite. Prompt action is required. See our DVD programme 'Managing Your Flock for Peak Health' for relevant information on how to combat fly-strike and other external parasites.

shady field

 5 things to remember
...things that will help livestock in hot weather
1Sheep - Be vigilant and check for flystrike at least daily as the efficacy of treatments applied early in the season may be waning by now
1Pigs - Can suffer from sunburn, so make sure they have access to shade & water to wallow in
1Horses - Can drink between 20-40 litres of water each day, so check the trough regularly
1All livestock - When planning field rotations, think about prioritising shady fields for the most vulnerable stock - young stock and breeding stock - as overheating can cause temporary infertility
1All livestock - Similarly, breezy open fields will both cool the animals and minimise fly nuisance

things to do on your smallholding this month

July is another busy month, but the long daylight hours give you plenty of extra time in the evening to get all your jobs done. Here are some top tips from our 'Things to Do' pages - available on our website.

  • Sheep - the ideal grass height for ewes is 4-8cms. As it grows longer it loses a lot of its nutritional value, so you may need to top the fields to maintain the optimum sward
  • Chickens - feeding garlic (fresh chopped, or dried granules) can help repel gut worms in chickens
  • Pigs - in addition to clean drinking water, try to provide a 'wallow' for your pigs to keep them cool. The mud also acts as a 'sunblock' in summer and an 'overcoat' in winter
  • Vegetable garden - if you need to water, do it late in the evening so that the water will have time to penetrate the soil without being evaporated by the sun
  • Horses - white or pink areas on the horse (such as around the muzzle area) can be seriously sunburned, so apply UV block daily to all sensitive areas
