Our new Online Cheese Shop Is now Open...
Having made our very first ever Stilton (type) cheese (see next month's issue for our 'how to make it' guide), we have now opened our  cheese shop which sells everything you need to make cheese, from rennett to cheese presses.

In next Month's Issue...
Paul is tapping away frantically on his keyboard getting the next issue finalised and ready for the printer next Tuesday. It will include articles on making your own Stilton (type) cheese for Christmas, a step-by-step guide to building a brick oven for the garden by reader Matthew McCullagh, creating pickles across the centuries, including a Mediaeval pickle called 'Compost' - much better than it sounds, honest, and an article on pruning for the nervous among you which shoudl give you the confidence to snip away. Of course there will be all your usual favourites too, from Dot Tyne's Smallholder Diary to John Harrison's essential 'on the plot' article for kitchen gardeners and allotmenteers (and anyone else, in fact). Why not subscribe and ensure you get it sent to you together with a copy of the River Cottage Every Day cookbook, complete with 416 pages of delicious recipes... just look to the left!
And the Winners are...
Congratulations to Paula Topham, Jayne Davey, Rozzy, Sandra Priest and Rebekah Pole - you've bagged a 6 issue subscription to Home Farmer starting with the November issue which will be sent out a week from today. We've also awarded a special bonus sub to Pete Shepherd's mate who keeps nicking his copy. We are both real suckers for a sob story!
The current Issue of Home Farmer...
In this Month's Home Farmer...
Our current issue contains our autumn crafts section and features apple trees and soft fruit bushes, seed bombing, medlars and quinces, our usual features on polytunnels and foraging, geese for the larger garden, Dot Tyne' smallholder diary, uniting bee colonies, recipes galore, including a few from River Cottage and special features on a Pennine farm producing raw milk and co-operatives which help to give people access to land and the skills to work it. We also have a couple of great competitions for a vegtrug and a polytunnel, and free fruit bushes for readers.
And your new Home Farmer also comes complete with a lick of new paint as our designer, Chris Charles, has slogged away for several months to perfect a new and fresh look for your favourite magazine - the first upgrade for many years. Chris has worked with us since the very first issue, and much of what Home farmer is comes courtesy of him. We hope you like the new look, and continue to appreciate the content, which we have not attempted to alter.

And finally... a cheesy Thank you...
And finally... congratulations to Vale of Belvoir cheese manufacturer,Long Clawson Dairies, voted Supreme Champion at this year's Global Cheese Awards for their renowned Stilton. The company have been making cheese for over 100 years and the milk for their cheese is sourced only from local farms. Long Clawson is one of only six dairies in the world able to make Stilton due to its PDO status. The company also made kind comments about a photo of Ruth's home-made Stilton (type) cheese on Twitter, which she greatlt appreciated. Admittedly, the company probably didn't feel overly threatened by Ruth's venture. The photo above was taken today and the cheese on the left is one week older than the cheese on the right. They both inhabit our cheese cave beneath the stairs when not posing for shots.
