Knowing Your Parasites
The aim of the day is to identify and discuss the various parasites which can affect your flock. With focus on the correlation between the effects of parasites and the long term health of the flock.

This workshop will be focusing on raising awareness of the impacts and giving
 
practical guidance on what signs to look for in your sheep and how to effectively manage the issues, so that the health and welfare of the flock is maintained.

Minimising Disease at Pasture
The aim of the day is to discuss the issues around grazing, identifying the disease and performance issues that can arise when working on grass based systems and the potential to maximise performance.
 
 Wednesday 28th January 2015

The workshop will begin at Haywain Pub, High Road, Stanford-le-Hope, Basildon, Essex, SS17 9NR

We will then move on to Marsh Farm for the farm walk element of the workshop, kindly hosted by Alex Sell.

10:00am The day will start with an informative session, covering:
 Maintaining ewe and lamb health requirements
 Disease implications
 Pasture management for disease prevention
 Body conditioning

12:30 Lunch and travel down road to Marsh Farm, Vange, Basildon, Essex, SS16 4QG. Our farm host is Mr Alex Sell.

1:30pm The afternoon will be comprised of a farm walk looking at pastures and their nutritional value:
• Where do the potential pitfalls exist for keeping sheep well fed and healthy
• Pasture management to maintain body condition

3:30pm Summary with Q&A, with the opportunity for further discussion

4.00pm Finish with refreshments
 
The workshop will be looking at disease incidents and examples of using grass
 
based systems to support sheep health. The visit will give the attendees the opportunity to discuss how you can work with your vet to improve health management of the flock and reviewing body condition regularly.

Growing a Healthy Beef Herd
Focus on optimising animal health, welfare and to give you the tools to support the growth of a healthy beef herd.

 Infectious disease in a beef herd
 Calving patterns – why it is important to maintain a tight pattern to prevent production related diseases establishing themselves.
12:30pm Lunch and discussion on the ‘Impact of disease on herd growth’
1:00pm The afternoon will be looking at herd management:
 Use of body condition scoring as a tool
 Importance of correct nutritional management to avoid cow and calf losses
 Pro and cons of bull choice
2:00pm Summary with Q&A 
 
The aim of this workshop is to provide an understanding of how proactive 
 
health management will reduce the risk of production related diseases in your herd. How creating an effective calving pattern will positively impact your disease incidents and ultimately how your bull and fertility choices will improve your herd health. The workshop has been designed to be interactive and give all attendees an opportunity to question and share ideas. 
 
 
The cost of each event is £40+VAT per person.
